Stephen Ministries was founded in 1975, by Rev. Kenneth C. Haugh, Ph. D., a St. Louis Lutheran pastor and clinical psychologist.

Stephen Ministries Objective: “Christ Caring for People through People.” This is achieved by teaching “Lay people” to be “Caregivers;” the recipients of this ministry will be “Care Receivers.” Caregivers will not function as therapists, but as helpers who will provide emotional and spiritual support. Their focus will not be on results, as would be the case with a professional therapist, but on the process of urging and prompting the Care Receivers through their situations.

Also, within the scope of this program, Vitas, a Hospice Care Organization, will be providing training and Hospice Caregiver Certification here at Hartford.

Stephen Ministries Vision: “We are modeling Jesus' response to those in need by loving, listening, and caring for them.”
